What exactly is FST?

Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) is an incredibly relaxing form of  assisted stretching that targets muscle, fascia,  and the entire joint capsule. Wearing comfortable, loose clothing we will begin working on one limb, utilizing comfortable straps to keep your body secured. Through a combination of slow undulating movements, applying traction (creating space within the joint before moving it) and breathing techniques your nervous system will calm down and your tissue will begin to relax..

These combined techniques simultaneously create more space within the joint capsule, which removes restrictions and allows for gains in Range Of Motion (ROM) and mobility much faster than traditional stretching.

What’s Fascia and Why is Stretching it Important?

Fascia is a web-like structure of specialized connective tissue covering your entire muscular system, internal organs, bones etc. from head to toe.

Think of fascia as a tight-fitting pair of jeans. It holds everything together, gives it structure and keeps muscles and organs from “spilling out.”  It also acts as a highway for the nervous system, allowing the brain to send signals to the muscles in order to perform all the complex movements we do in everyday life.

Is FST for me?

Absolutely! This is an essential service for anyone whether sedentary or active.

If you’re sedentary your muscles and fascia have most likely become shortened or compressed from inactivity. People whose work or personal life require long periods of sitting or inactivity can become stiff and sore, because the human anatomy is meant to be in motion. FST will help you regain and restore a healthy mobility.

If you’re athletic: No matter what your sport, FST will help improve your performance and reduce your recovery time between training sessions.  Removing restrictions in the joint increases the speed at which the joint will move and every activity is enhanced ny greater ROM.

If you’ve sustained a soft tissue/muscular injury: You of all people need FST!  An injured body will protect itself, or “guard” the injured area, and the surrounding fascia can become thickened and shortened. The ability of FST to calm the nervous system will allow the tissue to relax, removing impingements and improving  circulation to the affected area.

Does FST Hurt?

  1. To the contrary, FST is enjoyable, relaxing and stimulating. The most common feedback I get from my clients is that they feel “lighter”, “more open” and completely relaxed.  Think: a luxurious massage or yoga session—that tranquility you feel afterward? That’s more like what you’ll experience.

FST enables our bodies to gain and maintain greater flexibility, along with these added benefits:

  • Improves circulation
  • Reduced risk of injury
  • Helps with pain associated with sports injuries
  • Improves muscular balance and symmetry
  • Improves posture
  • Increases flexibility and joint mobility
  • Improved muscle function
  • Increased sports performance
  • Improved relaxation
  • Decreased compression and Impingement in joints
